The location was Hangar #9, the last, and only WWI hangar of its kind. The facility is on the National Historic Register and is a Historic Landmark previously known as an US Air Force flight training installation. Built in 1918 as part of 16 hangars at Brooks Field, this one and only last remaining hangar was the topic of discussion today with several dignitaries present. Plans for the development of this site were presented by the Brooks Development Agency, County Commissioner, Precinct #4, Tommy Adkisson and the Architect, Debra J. Dockery. Initial plans call for stabilization of the Hangar #9 structure and the internment site of Sidney J. Brooks, Jr. Future plans call for a Community Center and green space for community activities. Ms. Reba Malone and other BDA Board members were present at today's meeting, as well as local news media in attendance for this community discussion and unveiling of the plans for this National Monument site.
It would be nice to mention Mr. Grauke who built this hangar and Hangar #5 back in 1917. (and others I believe) The info is at the history department @ Brooks with newspaper articles and photos of his son Lee J Grauke taken about 7 or 8 years.
ReplyDeleteVery cool! Can we access that information at Brooks?
